Who can apply?

The Foundation Year is only open to students from socio-economic backgrounds that are classified as 'disadvantaged' by LMH:

The Foundation Year is specifically designed for students who haven't been able to reach their academic potential because of socio-economic factors outside of your control. We use information on your household income and the occupation/education of your parents to determine eligibility - or, if you are a care leaver or estranged, we use that instead.

There are two ways in which you can be eligible for the programme:

1. You have never attended an independent/private school

AND

2. You are eligible for home fee status

AND

3. If you are care experienced and have been in
the care of the local authority for at least 6 months in your life

OR

4. If you identify as estranged from your family

If you would like to know more about how we determine eligibility for the programme and what academic evidence we use to do so, please contact us.

Finding out your socio-economic group:

Occupations in the UK are categorised into 8 groups, and groups 4-8 are under-represented in higher education. To calculate what NS-SEC group you are in you need to enter the job title of your parent(s) into this online tool. Once you have entered their job title in the box and pressed 'search', you will see a range of options. Select that which most clearly aligns with the job of your parent/guardian. A new window will open up. Under the heading 'NS-SEC categorisations' you will see a 'simplified NS-SEC analytic class' number. This number is your NS-SEC category.

If you are at all unsure, then please email us on foundation@lmh.ox.ac.uk and we will help.
